Here at Daisy Elephant, I turn your loved ones most cherished clothes into a beautiful keepsake quilt to treasure forever - many are made out of baby clothes but some have also been made as a memory and much needed comfort of a loved one that has passed. Made using traditional quilting methods the result is a luxury high-quality quilt made of 3 layers, quilted and hand finished.
To me, piecing the top together is a work of art, making sure that all of the pieces are carefully placed, providing a balanced design across the quilt. Each item of clothing is carefully thought through, making sure that each is used in the best way - paying attention to special motifs, pockets, frills, buttons and embroidery. I can also embroider your child's name, date of birth, weight and time on one of the squares if you wish.
As you can see from the photos below, my creative style avoids rows of straight squares, allowing me to take the best areas from each garment. Once the quilt top is created and sewn together, it is then layered with a light wadding and backing and then carefully quilted being sympathetic to the design.
In terms of the amount of clothes, I feel that the most important thing is that everything that you really treasure is included. For that reason I don't specify a number of items, but instead recommend sorting through the clothes and dividing them into numbered bags, '1' being must haves, '2' being 'if possible' and '3' being 'if needed'. I then start with the most important items and let the garments. sizes of motifs and colours guide the layout. The amount customers have given me has truly varied - some have given me several large bags for a single bed quilt,... on the contrary I have also made a double bed quilt out of just 4 large adult t-shirts.
I give each customer a choice of backing, colour of binding and whether or not you would like a border. The sizes are estimates and are flexible (within reason) as the most important thing is the final finish rather than the final exact meaurements. The prices may need to be adjusted accordingly to your exact requirements - but this usually only occurs if you require a more expensive fabric for the back of the quilt.
The general prices and sizes are as follows:
Small Memory Quilt: c 70cm x 90cm £80
Single Bed Memory Quilt c 120cm x 160cm £150
Double Bed Memory Quilt c 160cm x 160cm £200
